What actually moves gold

Real yields

Gold pays no coupon. When inflation-adjusted yields fall, holding metal costs less and price tends to rise. This is the single strongest medium-term driver.

The US dollar

A softer DXY makes gold cheaper in every other currency and lifts physical demand. When gold and the dollar rally together, positioning is in charge.

Central-bank demand

Official-sector buying is a slow structural bid that keeps drawdowns shallower than technicals alone would suggest.

Positioning & risk events

Crowded longs into CPI or FOMC are the classic setup for a violent flush that reverses within the hour. Trade the reaction, not the forecast.

Outlook & predictions

Bull case. Rate cuts land as priced, real yields keep falling and central banks keep accumulating. Dips stay shallow and each consolidation resolves higher.

Base case. Range expansion with violent two-way reactions around CPI and FOMC. Trend traders get chopped; level traders get paid.

Bear case. Inflation reaccelerates, cuts get repriced out, the dollar squeezes higher and long positioning unwinds fast — historically a 4-8% drawdown in weeks, not months.

Scenarios, not forecasts. Position for what invalidates you, not for what you hope.

Intraday playbook

  • Mark the weekly high/low and prior day high/low before London opens.
  • Wait for the first 15-minute range of your session; trade the break or the failure, not both.
  • Skip the first 60 seconds after CPI/NFP — spreads widen and stops get taken on both sides.
  • Size by the stop distance in dollars, never by lots you 'feel' comfortable with.
  • One A+ gold setup per session beats six B-grade ones. Volatility rewards patience here.
